Our society offers various opportunities for volunteering in church, civic, and patriotic events in Sealy. We participate in patriotic events like Flag Day ceremonies and national days of volunteering, such as Join Hands Day and Make A Difference Day.
In honor of Flag Day, which is observed annually on June 14, our society pays homage to the American flag with a special program at all three Masses during a weekend in June at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sealy. The society has a patriotic floral arrangement placed in the sanctuary, and the Sunday 9 AM Mass is for living and deceased society members. The Sealy Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, in full regalia, join in the program. The program includes a short story about the flag, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and singing "The Star Spangled Banner." Then, while the organist softly plays "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" in the background, the reader reads the dramatic "I Am Your Flag," written by Master Sergeant Percy Webb, USMC.
Join Hands Day occurs on the first Saturday of May each year. This is a day set aside for youth and adults to join hands to complete a community project. Our society is one of five local fraternal societies sponsoring a Join Hands Day project of placing small U.S. flags on the graves of veterans at seven local cemeteries. Besides Sealy KJT Society #80, other organizations include Hermann Sons Lodge 239-2, Knights of Columbus Council 3313, SPJST Lodge 141, and Woodmen Life Chapter 105, assisted by area boy and girl scout troops, along with their leaders and family members.
Make A Difference Day is a national community service event which is held annually on the fourth Saturday in October. On this day, people throughout the U.S. unite in the common mission to improve the lives of others. Our society's members visit with residents of the local nursing home and present them with small gifts consisting of items such as facial tissue, socks, and snack crackers.
